StarMetro Drives the Love with Food Donations

Annual Stuff the Bus Food Drive Runs Feb. 1-28

January 31, 2019

This Friday, Feb. 1, StarMetro, the City of Tallahassee's public transit system, will launch its annual Stuff the Bus food drive to support America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend. This year's theme is "Drive the Love in Tallahassee."

To encourage donations, free StarMetro bus passes for same day travel will be offered all day on February 1, 2 and 14 to those who donate non-perishable food items. Citizens who donate two items can ride free one way, and those who donate three items can ride free all day.

According to Second Harvest, one in five people – including children, families and seniors – in the Big Bend are at risk of not having enough to eat. Stuff the Bus will help fill the shelves of Second Harvest during a time of year when donations are historically low.

StarMetro will collect donations of non-perishable food from February 1-28 on StarMetro buses. You can also donate at the City facilities listed below and local business throughout Tallahassee. For a full list of donation drop-off sites, visit Talgov.com/StarMetro.

  • C.K. Steele Plaza, 111 W. Tennessee St
  • City Hall, 300 S. Adams St.
  • Trousdell Gymnastics Center, 326 John Knox Rd.
  • Tallahassee Senior Center, 1400 N. Monroe St.
  • Frenchtown Renaissance Center, 435 N. Macomb St.
  • Sue Herndon McCollum Community Center, 501 Ingleside Ave.
  • Forestmeadows Park & Athletic Center, 4750 N. Meridian Rd.
  • Tallahassee Police Department, 234 E. Seventh Ave.
  • Tallahassee Fire Department, Stations 1-4 and 16 (view station addresses here)

Canned vegetables, boxes of pasta, rice, cereal, canned meat and peanut butter are ideal as they can be used to make balanced meals.

Through this annual effort, StarMetro, with the help of the community, provides thousands of meals to residents in need. Last year, nearly 4,000 pounds of food were collected, which helped provide over 3,264 meals to local families.

America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend serves residents in 11 local counties. Over the past year, Second Harvest distributed more than 11.2 million pounds of food through its partner agencies – totaling more than 9.3 million meals. To learn more, visit fightinghunger.org.
