Community Engagement

Join us as we work towards a clean energy future.

Sunset over a lake

In October 2022, the City initiated a series of public events with a focus on continuing conversations with residents and stakeholders on the future energy landscape for the community. These venues built on prior outreach efforts in 2020-21 which focused primarily on education and defining the clean energy planning process.

The community-wide sessions wrapped up in 2022, while stakeholder discussions continued into early 2023. If you were not able to attend any of the community events, please feel free to reach us at cleanenergy@talgov.com with any questions, comments, and suggestions.

FAQs

What does this goal for 100% clean, renewable energy mean? Why does it matter?

This goal continues the City’s shift away from fossil fuels towards cleaner, renewable energy sources like solar power. This transition will involve the types of vehicles and transportation we use, as well. Switching to cleaner energy sources will take place over time, but we need to keep at it to reverse the effects of climate change while creating a strong, more resilient community.

What counts as “clean, renewable energy” in this Plan?

The list of “clean, renewable energy” includes solar, wind, hydroelectric (water flow), geothermal (heat released from the Earth), biomass waste, biogas, energy efficiency and conservation and other technologies still being explored.

How will this work?

The first step towards achieving this goal is developing a plan to get there. The City’s Clean Energy Plan released August 2023 describes the path forward for the next 5-7 years. Additional planning efforts are underway for the years that follow. The use of emerging clean energy technologies shall be evaluated on an ongoing basis as these technologies become available.

How much will this cost? Who’s going to pay for this?

We want to reach our energy goals without creating financial burden on our residents and businesses. As such, your participation throughout this process is key.

I don’t live within City limits; will I be impacted by this?

If you live or work in Tallahassee or close by, we’d like to hear from you. You don’t have to be a customer of the City’s Electric and Gas Utility to provide input. Our clean energy goals will eventually touch everyone who travels into or through our community.

Where can I find information on the Community Conversations from Dec 2021?

Community Conversations (December 2021)

The City hosted another round of community conversations in December 2021 to discuss the pathways to achieve our 100% net, clean renewable energy goals. These events were an opportunity for community members to contribute to the planning process and provide additional input on the clean energy roadmap. A special thanks to all who participated! If you missed the event, a sample recording will be posted here in the future. Check back soon.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or would like to provide feedback, please contact us at: cleanenergy@talgov.com.
