What are the requirements of a food truck?

The location of a food truck in all cases requires the property owner's consent. Also, a food truck cannot be located in the public right-of-way. From the perspective of the Zoning Code, the siting of a food truck generally falls into one of the five categories listed below.

  • A self-contained food truck that does not remain in one location and that does not require utility connections (i.e. electric, water, etc.) does not require land use review by the City.
  • All food trucks that are permanently located at a single site must be located in a zoning district that allows a restaurant use.
  • If a food truck requires construction of a supporting structure, then that structure will require a building permit, an environmental permit waiver, and payment of a transportation concurrency fee.
  • If a food truck is permanently located at a single, vacant site and if it complies with all of the development standards in the associated zoning district, the City will authorize new utility connections for the food truck. Please note that the zoning development standards include but are not limited to setbacks, maximum lot coverage, paved parking, stormwater, landscaping, solid waste, site lighting, and similar features. Other City departments may also have additional requirements for a permanent facility. You are encouraged to apply for a free pre-submittal of your project to determine the potential scope of other comments.
  • If the site has an existing primary use, the food truck (as a secondary use) could obtain utilities from the existing primary use with the property owner's consent.
