Growth FAQ - Code Enforcement

How does the code enforcement process work from beginning to end?

There are five key steps, as follows:

  1. A case is started, and the Code Officer will do an initial inspection to see if the violations exist.
  2. If violations are found, our Code Officer will try to make contact with the property owner to explain the violation(s) and how to correct them within a specific timeframe.
  3. If the issue can't be resolved voluntarily, the Code Officer will issue a notice of violation and give additional time to make the corrective actions before sending the case to a hearing
  4. The hearing is held with either the Code Board or the Environmental Board. The property owner is given an opportunity to address the Code or Environmental Board, and staff also presents their recommendation.
  5. The Code Board or Environmental Board issue an order which identifies how to resolve the violation. Penalties may be assessed if the violation is not resolved within the specified timeframe.
  6. If the violation is corrected within the specified timeframe, no fines will be assessed and the case will be closed out.
  7. If the violation is not corrected within the specified timeframe, a lien may be filed on the property. Once the property is in compliance, the property owner can request a reconsideration hearing to reduce the fines and release the lien.
